ART AS GURU

This page is a record of the artworks that emerged from (and with hindsight appear to have led)

the Mystical revelation of a deeper reality described in The Myth of Reality.

In 1998 following an epiphany at an exhibition of sculpture by Constantine Brancussi I resigned from my job to explore sculpture. I wished only to gain insight into what had happened in the Gallery that rainy afternoon. What did Brancussi know? What had he imbued his work with that had elicited such a powerful emotional release in me? A release that lasted for weeks and ultimately changed the trajectory of my life.

Sculpture: 1999 - 2000

The first sculptures were shaped from wood and partially charred. They represented the waking visions of my own soul (loss) that I experienced as a result of intense and prolonged pain during this period following my resignation from my job and moving to a new home in Larkhall, Bath.

Having made contact with the sculptor David Nash I moved to Snowdonia where I became his assistant.

One night I woke up in a freezing sweat with my hands rigid like claws. Having received a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis I was no longer able to work as a sculptor and entered a period of making video, text and print works on paper.

'BLIND FOR ST. FRANCIS' (2003)

5 STILL IMAGES FROM VIDEO

In 2003 I made a short visit to Assissi in Umbria, home of St Francis. Back home in Snowdonia I decided to make a piece of work dedicated to St Francis. It was a warm Summer afternoon and a gentle breeze blew the cotton blinds in and out like a breath. As the wind drew back the blind was sucked back against the frame of sash window. As I watched it cyclically revealed the T of the Tau cross of St. Francis. The work had revealed itself in direct response to my decision to make a work dedicated to St Francis. Over the years the Tau cross has become a significant symbol of the journey of revelation of deeper truth.

'UNCTION' (2004)

PHOTGRAPHIC DYPTICH FROM VIDEO 'CHAPEL'

'CHAPEL' was my first on-site video work from which I created a number of stand alone works from video stills. An abandoned local chapel revealed layers of repurposing of the once sacred space; storage for a speed boat, a car mechanics garage and a weight training space were just some. Remnants of it's orignal purpose lay abandoned everywhere both in material objects and the marks made through time upon the derelict structure of the building itself; scuff marks on the stairs of previous worshippers sunday best shoes, and a magnificently abandoned Bible full of etchings. One of the survivors of the biblical flood became the basis for a number of printworks. It has in recent years become omnipresent online.
